Former Cambridgeshire Lib Dem councillor Rupert Moss-Eccardt tonight called for immediate safety improvements following another collision on the same Ely road.

Mr Moss-Eccardt was reacting after a car ended up on its roof following a collision with a Volvo in Kings Avenue.

“Yet another car on roof in Kings Avenue,” Mr Moss-Eccardt, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for SW Norfolk said on Twitter. “Police and Cambridgeshire County Council must stop shirking their responsibilities.”

One local resident out walking her dog said “It was only a matter of time before another accident happened on this stretch of road because of all the parking issues”

Last October residents complained that speeding and HGVs were putting lives at risk on the housing estate. The fears were expressed after a car had overturned on the junction of Kings Avenue and High Barns.

Residents claim the road through the estate is being used as a race track that is made worse by lack of marked out parking restrictions.

One resident even spoke at a meeting of the City of Ely Council last year and warned that “the number of lorries that use the road seems to be growing.

“There have been a number of occasions when two lorries have been approaching from opposite directions and the parked vehicles mean that the road is only wide enough for one vehicle and the other has to reverse.”

The county council responded to criticism by suggesting the city council could apply for funds to help finance safety improvements such as traffic calming measures
