A unique memory-gathering project by a theatre group in Littleport has seen dozens of buttons stitched together.
The Button Tree project by The Field Theatre Group is a large-scale community textile work created by Littleport-based textile artist and tutor, Fiona Lidgey-Robinson with volunteers from the community.
Special garments that hold a sentiment, such as a wedding dress, soldier’s tunic or old school blazer, all have a story to share and residents are invited to contribute buttons from these items to add onto the Button Tree.
They can also scan photographs on to fabric and incorporate them into this textile work, to form a truly memorable ‘community memory gallery’.
It will tour to a variety of locations, including Ely Museum, before finding a permanent home in the Adams Heritage Centre.
The Button Tree project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and has been chosen as one of HLF’s three featured projects in Cambridgeshire for 2018.
