The Royal Standard, on Forehill, has applied for permission to extend the pub to accommodate five guest bedrooms and two staff bedrooms.

The application proposes to convert the first and second floor staff accommodation by adding a two-story extension to the back of the pub, as well as a new internal staircase and fencing.

Walsingham Planning, who have submitted the application on behalf of the pub, say the extension would “allow the public house to continue to be used for its original purpose for years to come” and that it is “crucial that the owners regularly invest in improvements to keep it operating to modern commercial standards.”

They also call the pub, which is a grade two listed building, a “valuable community facility” for the city and say the proposals would help to “preserve the fabric of the listed building” and also “enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
