It is the seventh year of the awards, run in association with N&C Glass.

This year we have 10 awards up for grabs, nine of which are open for entries. They will identify East Cambridgeshire’s best small and medium businesses, the most innovative online firms and the most impressive start-ups.

A category also returning is the Business in the Community Award, which will recognise businesses that contribute to the communities in which they are based without the expectation of direct commercial benefit.

Quality customer service will also be recognised, as will the retailers that stand out from the crowd.

All of the categories are highlighted in the panel on this page.

A ‘winner of winners’ will be chosen from the nine category winners for the grand title of Commercial Business of the Year.

Michell Instruments won a hat-trick of trophies at the 2014 East Cambridgeshire Business Awards – including the title of Commercial Business of the Year.

The company, based on the Lancaster Way Business Park, near Ely, also won the Employer of the Year award and the Medium Business of the Year award.

Judges praised the long service record of employees – which averages 15 years – as well as its apprenticeship programme, profit growth and new products.

“This world-leading business is truly a gem amongst the East Cambridgeshire community,” said the judges at last year’s event.

“In 2007 the business relocated from Cambridge to purpose-built premises on the Lancaster Way Business Park, to specifically take advantage of all the benefits that this part of the world offers.

“Since then, the business has grown, prospered and must now be one of the biggest independent employers in the area.

“Its products, research and development, premises, systems, growth, ambitions and financials are all truly impressive.”

Other previous winners of the Commercial Business of the Year award include Blue Donkey of Ely (2009), G’s Marketing of Barway (2010), Quotient Bioresearch of Fordham (2011 and 2012) and PA Answer of Ely (2013).

As well as N&C Glass, supporters of the awards include Whiting & Partners, Cheffins, JDR Cable Systems, Advanced Aircraft Training, Leeds Day Solicitors and Michell Instruments.

Businesses and individuals shortlisted in the categories will be invited to the awards dinner, which will take place on Friday, October 2, at Ely Cathedral’s Lady Chapel.

Also among the invited guests at the black tie event will be business leaders, council dignitaries, award sponsors and our judging panel, which consists of independent business leaders and award sponsors.

Entry is still open for the awards – the closing date is Friday, July 24.
