AN Ely butchers is celebrating winning a prestigious national award for its home-cured bacon.

Edis, on Ely’s High Street, scooped a Gold Award in the Red, White and Bacon awards, beating off competition from several national supermarket chains.

The business is owned and run by Andew Edis, whose late father, Mowbray, founded the butchers some 53 years ago.

To win the coveted Gold Award, the bacon has to score between 95-100, with only a tiny handful of entrants achieving the highest standard.

Andrew said: “We have won lots of awards for our sausages before but we decided to enter our bacon for the first time this year and we were highly surprised that it won.

“We have been doing the same things for 53 years and our customers tell us they like these things but we didn’t expect that we would win gold, it was really satisfying.”

Andrew added that they hand make 60 different pork products on site and use their own spice room, where their award-winning recipes are formulated.
