A BURGLAR who uttered the words "well done boys, you have got me," when he was found hiding in bushes near Jewsons in Ely has been ordered to carry out 100-hours of unpaid community work.

Bouncer Tommy Saunders, 21, was also ordered to pay £250 court costs by Ely magistrates on Thursday.

Saunders, of Manor Close, Witchford, stole £1,200-worth of roof insulation from Jewsons, and hid in the bushes when an alarm was activated.

A door at the premises had been forced, and a hammer was found nearby, said prosecutor Emma Dmitriev.

Saunders had initially denied burglary, but admitted the offence when forensic evidence came to light.

Mitigating, Tiffany Wilkinson said: "It was a rash decision to take the action he did, he appreciates it was foolish and stupid. He planned to sell the insulation."

She said Saunders was a sensible young man with seven GCSEs, and had considered taking his A-levels and becoming a science teacher.

Presiding magistrate Janet South told Saunders: "You are a young man with the whole of your life in front of you. You are 21 years of age, and do something as stupid as this, we hope you have now learned your lesson.
