BRYAN Martin of Mildenhall died at the West Suffolk Hospital after a fight against cancer. He was aged 72. Born in Ely, he was the second eldest of 17 children. He worked on the land with shire horses after leaving school. After two years' National Service in the Army, he went back to the land. Before his retirement in 1999, Bryan was employed at Highpoint Prison as a night patrol officer for 13 years.

He was a keen bowler, playing at West Row club and was a keen supporter of the Young Cadet Bowlers at Ely Bowls Club, encouraging them in the sport and he was very proud of his grandson Wayne who plays at the club. He enjoyed gardening and local flower shows.

He was a wonderful family man and adored by all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was married to his wife, Hazel, for 36 years.

The funeral took place at Bury St Edmund's crematorium on January 23. Donations in lieu of flowers to St Nicholas' Hospice.
