A MAN who struggled with police in Ely city centre when searched for drugs has been bound over to keep the peace for six months, in the sum of £200.

Peter Stirling, 27, of Tudor Lodge, Welney, had previously denied a charge of assaulting a police officer on August 18, and was due to face trial this week.

Prosecuting, Angela Sassoli told city magistrates that Pc Timothy Matthews had suffered a minor injury to his cheek that needed one stitch.

There had been no intention of to harm the officer, said solicitor James Dignan, although Stirling did admit he caused the injury.

- The charge of assault was withdrawn by the Crown Prosecution Service.
