A book detailing the history of RAF Witchford was launched on Sunday.

More than 60 people – including mayor of Ely Cllr Elaine Griffin-Singh - were in attendance for the event, which saw the work of Ely man Barry Aldridge put into print.

Mr Aldridge, 67, was involved in setting up a display of memorabilia at Ely Museum back in 1995 to make 50 years since the end of the Second World War.

The event proved to be a success and the owners of the Lancaster Way Business Park, which was home to the RAF base, agreed to set aside space for a permanent display in Witchford.

Mr Aldridge, a plumber, agreed and the museum has continued to grow ever since. In 2010, when he retired, Mr Aldridge decided to start work on a book to collate all the research and information he had collected over the years.

Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s before he could complete his work and now resides in the Soham Lodge nursing home. His wife Sue was determined that his hard work would not be in vain, however, and, with the help of publisher Dr Chris Thomas, his wife Jane and friend Beth Lane, the book Memories of RAF Witchford was completed.

The book is on sale at Burrows Bookshop, in High Street Passage, with the profits split between the RAF Witchford museum and Soham Lodge.
