A woman from Cambridgeshire has written a book telling the stories of servicemen whose name feature on Haddenham’s war memorial.

Rosemary Gorman, who lives in Aldreth, has searched local and national records to find out about all the men who fell fighting for their country.

She has also spoken to as many surviving family members as possible to try and give a picture of each life and death.

A man who was killed by a shell while attending wounded and a young airman who crashed his aircraft in the sea are among the stories in the book entitled ‘Loyal Sons and True’.

It takes it name from a poem written by a young airman from Haddenham.

Rosemary said: “I believe it is important to let people know who the men really were whose names are read out on Armistice Day, especially this year when we will be commemorating the centenary of the end of the First World War.”

‘Loyal Sons and True’ is available at Burrows Book Shop in Ely and from Haddenham Library, priced at £4.99.
