At 1.44am on Saturday (20) crews from Cottenham and Sutton were called to a fire in the open in Twentypence Road, Wilburton.
A large bonfire made up of about 500 tonnes of waste and tyres was well alight. Firefighters set up equipment to pump water from a nearby river onto the fire to contain and reduce it.
Relief crews were provided by Chatteris and Soham. At 8.30am the incident was scaled down to just one crew and by 1pm the fire service agreed to allow the fire to burn under the control of land owner.
All crews had left the scene by 1.30pm. The cause of the fire was deliberate.
