THIEVES smashed their way into an aviary at a Littleport nursing home and stole up to 30 birds. They disturbed nesting boxes, grabbing birds that were just a few days old and made off with budgies, canaries and parakeets. Maintenance worker, Russell Young, discovered the aviary door smashed off its hinges and birds flying loose in the grounds of The Grange nursing home in Littleport. Matron, Cathy Doswell, said: "The aviary could be seen from the dining room and residents enjoyed watching the birds. I am concerned that whoever did this may have come with the intention of getting into the house and when they couldn't they smashed up the aviary in spite." Staff at the nursing home found footprints on the grass and believe the thieves entered the six-acre grounds over the back fence and may have stole the birds to sell at Southery market.
