A new video filmed from thousands of feet in the sky shows that the development of Ely’s £13.6 million leisure village is quickly progressing.

The footage offers a bird’s eye view of the site on Downham Road, which once complete will include an eight-lane 25 metre pool, a 120-station health and fitness suite, two activity studios, a four-court sports hall and a 3G artificial grass pitch. A Cineworld cinema will also be built on the site.

The building of the East Cambridgeshire District Leisure Centre was given the go ahead in August when Sport England approved a £1.5 million lottery award.

The money to develop it has come from Sport England’s Strategic Facility Fund, which offers investment to local authorities looking to improve their sports facilities.

The Downham Road centre will replace the city-centre Paradise Centre Pools.

London-based contractors Pellikaan are overseeing the build, before GLL Sport Foundation take over once it is completed in early 2018.

A Cineworld cinema will also be built on the site.
