A Landbeach charity has unveiled two new additions to its community - Betty and Wilma a pair of pigs whose favourite snacks are Cheerios breakfast cereal.
The duo will join a clutch of chickens already at the spacious Emmaus site that supports the homeless within a social enterprise with a seconds shop of clothing, books and furniture as well as a home baked cake and coffee shop.
Alex Mayer, MEP, met chief executive Diane Doherty who explained how Emmaus offers more than food and shelter to people who become homeless. Mr Mayer said: “I’m delighted to be back here today to celebrate the achievements of this international charity.
“I knew that Emmaus took unwanted furniture, but I was very surprised to hear they took in two pigs as well. I’m glad they’ve gone to a great home.”
Tara Constable, Emmaus administration assistant, said: “They’re really friendly and love belly rubs, their favourite snack is Cheerios! We can’t wait for you all to meet them.”
The charity helps people regain their self-esteem by carrying out meaningful work in their social enterprises, providing access to training, employment and support services.
It encourages everyone to take a full role in their community through tending the vegetable plot, caring for chickens and now pigs too.
