Battle of the Sexes is being screened by the Ely City Amnesty Group this Saturday, April 14, in the Lecture Theatre at the Old Palace.
The 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs is considered a milestone in the public acceptance of women’s tennis.
The makers of Little Miss Sunshine have turned it into a film, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell. Yet the film is so much more than the story of a tennis match. Both players were fighting personal battles.
The fiercely private King was not only championing equality but struggling to come to terms with her sexuality.
Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, was wrestling with his gambling demons – at the expense of his family.
Both actors were nominated for Golden Globes and the film got four stars from both the Guardian and the Daily Mail.
The film starts at 7pm (doors open from 6.30pm) and tickets (£6) are available from Burrows Bookshop, online at www.wegottickets.com/events/433734 and on the door. All profits go to continuing the work of Amnesty International.
