The General Election battle in SE Cambs has been confirmed as a three horse race with neither the Greens nor UKIP opting to offer candidates for the June 8 poll.

Voters will have a straight choice with Lucy Frazer confirmed as the Tory choice, Huw Jones against fighting the seat for Labour and, this time round, Lucy Nethsingha called upon to fly the Lib Dem flag.

Ms Frazer has clearly decided Brexit is not the key issue for this campaign –a 500 word press release confirming her re-election by her party as their candidate omits a single mention of the B word.

She claims success for an injection of cash into local education through Opportunity Areas funding, and says she is working on “many infrastructure projects” and is enthusiastic about East Cambs becoming a 5G mobile pilot for superfast broadband.

She said: “I am delighted with the results of the campaign to save the Princess of Wales Minor Injuries Unit in Ely whose profile I did my best to raise with those concerned in Parliament and health officials locally.”

Lib Dem Lucy Nethsingha has been leader of her party’s group on the county council and says top of her list concerns are schools.

She says she has long campaigned for fairer funding for schools in Cambridgeshire and she now chairs the Liberal Democrats’ education policy committee.

“As leader of the opposition on Cambridgeshire, I have fought to protect health and care services for elderly people against repeated Conservative cuts,” she says.

“If elected as MP, I will fight for Britain’s future in the European Union and against Brexit which will cause so much damage to the Cambridgeshire economy”.

With East Cambridgeshire narrowly voting 50.9 per cent leave and 49.1 per cent remain it could well be Brexit remains ‘voter neutral’ in this campaign.

Huw Jones, who was Labour’s candidate for the SE Cambs constituency in 2015 and doubled his party’s share of the vote to 15 per cent, is also leaving the B word well alone. Again it didn’t figure in his early press statement.

“This Tory government has overseen the biggest cuts to our public services in a generation,” he says.

“The NHS and social care is in crisis, our local schools are struggling under the weight of the budget cuts and cuts to police budgets are putting our safety at risk.

“People here in South East Cambridgeshire need a local representative that will put them first. I will work tirelessly between now and June to let local people know that this general election will be a choice between a Labour Party that will stand up for the people of South East Cambridgeshire or a Conservative Party that only looks after the privileged few.”
