Auction of promises to raise money for Happy Cafe and Talking Freely in Ely

An auction of promises in Ely will raise money for two good causes in the city.
Talking FreELY and Happy Cafe Ely are holding the event at the Ely Tigers Rugby Club on October 13.
Everyone involved in the auction has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local Ely community.
Carly Mason, who works with both projects, said ‘We’re so lucky to live in a community where people want to get involved in and support initiatives that help people locally.
“When I saw the final list of auction lots it left me speechless. There is so much generosity here and genuine care for the community, it makes Ely and the surrounding area an amazing place to be.’
Almost 40 people and businesses have pledged items for auction lots including dog training at Developing Dogs, an overnight stay with dinner from Poets House Hotel and a bottle of House of Commons whisky signed by the Prime Minister, donated by MP Lucy Frazer.
A local cleaning service, electrician, hair and beauty professionals, restaurants, shops and artists are also among those who have pledged their time.
Happy Cafe Ely has a regular coffee morning at Julia’s Tearooms on the first and third Wednesday of each month where they discuss the 10 keys to happier living, introduced by Action for Happiness. This includes things such as giving, resilience and trying something new.
Following the success of the Happy Cafe in Ely, the team are now planning to offer the eight week ‘what matters’ course starting in April 2018. Talking FreELY had a successful first event at the Cathedral Conference centre where guest speakers with different expertise on mental health came together, along with Talking FreELY’s listening volunteers and of course, pop-up cafe.
Any funds raised from the charity auction will ensure that Talking FreELY can continue to break down mental health stigma and offer free events in the city.
Tickets for the auction of promises are on sale at Burrows Bookshop in High Street Passage. They are £10 which includes a fish and chip supper, live music from the Barstool Angels and the auction.
