An Ely artist – who was approached by Banksy to showcase his work at Dismaland in 2015 - has been chosen from thousands to have his work displayed at an internationally-acclaimed exhibition.

Lee Madgwick has been selected for the Derwent Art Prize 2018, where 67 works by 57 artists were shortlisted from 3,299 submissions received from 64 different countries.

The selection was made by an expert panel including V&A senior curator Gill Saunders, art critic Chris Sharratt, and artist Clare Woods.

The display showcases the best 2D and 3D artworks created in pencil, coloured pencil, pastel, graphite and charcoal.

The exhibition includes work by artists from 10 countries – France, Germany, Honk Kong, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, and the UK. It highlights a broad spectrum of drawing methods being utilised across the world.

A total of £12,500 will be awarded in the private awards ceremony on September 20. These include a first prize of £6,000, second prize of £3,000, third prize of £1,500 and the Young Artist Award of £750 for an artist under 25 years of age.

There is also a People’s Choice Award of £750, which gives the public an opportunity to vote for their favourite shortlisted work via the Derwent Art Prize Facebook page. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will close on September 4.

The shortlisted works, which include Madgwick’s detailed drawing ‘Shroud’, will be on display at London’s Mall Galleries from September 18 to 23.

Lee is also displaying his work at Byard Art Cambridge. The ‘Out of Place –New Work’s exhibition runs from September 6 to 30.

The Derwent Art Prize was started in 2012. It aims to reward excellence by showcasing the best artworks created in pencil by British and international artists.
