HUNDREDS of tonnes of straw were destroyed in a massive blaze which burned for five days after an arson attack near the Mepal Outdoor Centre.

Thieves rammed a stolen Ford Fiesta car into the bales of straw on Thursday night and set fire to them, sending flames ripping through the stack.

Fire-fighters spent the night containing the blaze which started in the 600 tonnes of straw at around 11pm on Thursday night.

They allowed the fire to burn slowly and crews were sent to damp down the surrounding area while the blaze burnt itself out.
