A YOUNG army cadet's quick-thinking helped to save the life of an elderly man who had collapsed outside Cambridge Railway Station.

Jodi Page, 16, from Chettisham, a sergeant with the Ely Army Cadets, was hailed a lifesaver by friends and officers from her squadron after she managed to resuscitate a 78 year-old man who had collapsed and stopped breathing.

Jodi, a former student at Ely Community College, was travelling to Long Road College in Cambridge with friends when she rushed to the aid of the man who was lying next to station's taxi rank.

Drawing on first-aid skills she learned during her four years with the cadets, she administered CPR to the man before putting him in the recovery position while ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

"Everyone was really shocked", said Jodi, "But I knew I could help. I checked to see if he was breathing and began CPR with a resuscitation shield I keep in my purse."

The youngster managed to restart the man's breathing and using a first aid kit supplied by railway staff, she also dressed a wound to his neck before paramedics arrived on the scene.

Ambulance staff later confirmed that the man regained consciousness in the ambulance on the way to Addenbrooke's Hospital and, as a result of Jodi's actions, he survived the terrifying ordeal.

Jodi's grandfather, Don Page, said: "When I heard the news I was so pleased and I am just so proud of Jodi for how she handled what was a tough situation."

"We are very proud of Jodi's actions" said first aid adviser Sgt Major Les Edwards. "We train these young people in life skills and this is absolute proof of their value".
