THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury paid a flying visit to Cambridgeshire this weekend, to launch celebrations to mark the 900th anniversary of Ely Cathedral.

In a Saturday service attended by representatives of each of the 350 Ely dioceses, the Archbishop officiated alongside the Bishop of Ely, Right Reverend Dr Anthony Russell.

Archbishop Rowan was fresh from a visit to Gs Marketing in Barway, near Soham, to hear about the agricultural company's reliance on migrant labour. Before the afternoon service at Ely, he headed to the rural church of St Mary Magdalen in Wiggenhall, near King's Lynn. Vicars in the Church of England's rural communities often face taking on more than one parish, church and their associated communities.

On Friday, the Archbishop arrived in Cambourne, where plans to build a non-denominational church are afoot.

The Bishop of Ely, Dr Anthony Russell, said: "We are enormously grateful to the Archbishop and all those who have played a role in making this weekend such a success.

"These celebrations give us an opportunity to express our thanksgiving for those who have sustained its life and mission in previous generations.

"We look forward to a marvellous year in which we shall celebrate the life, growth and development of the diocese.
