FORMER Ely Standard correspondent Ann Powell has finally let readers in on the secrets of her encyclopaedic knowledge of the city in a new book.

Mrs Powell, 70, was born in Broad Street and now lives just a stone's throw away by the river.

Her book Ann Without an E tells the story of her childhood and gives an insight into a city which has changed dramatically over the past half century.

"When my parents were growing up, Broad Street was like the East End of Ely. Bobbies would never patrol Waterside in less than twos but now its so gentrified," she said.

"The book is full of things I couldn't put in my column, it's a family book."

Mrs Powell will be signing her book at Burrows Bookshop from 10am on Saturday (October 20) in High Street Passage.
