ELY'S French market brought a huge range of continental food and drink to the Market Place at the weekend, and saw a ceremonial exchange of bread between England and France.

The three-day event, organised by the Marche de France team of French traders, saw Market Place, Dolphin Street and some of High Street become a full-scale market, with pate, charcuterie, and a range of wines on offer.

Tracey Harding, leisure and tourism office at East Cambridgeshire District Council, which helped organise the event, said: "We were very pleased to welcome the French market again this year."

"It really is a fantastic event, and livens up Market Place."

The centrepiece of the event was a magnificent cheese lorry with produce from Normandy and other regions, and French soap and crafts were available alongside the food and drink.

New at this year's market was an exchange of breads between English and French bakers, overseen by Ely mayor John Ison. Denis Avenil exchanged some French bread with his Sutton counterpart, Becky Bailey, who has a stall at Ely Market.
