The releasing of 200 helium-filled balloons marked the official opening of Ely's newest school.

The Lantern Primary School, in Downham Road - described as "good with outstanding features" in its first Ofsted report - was opened on Friday amid a day of celebrations.

The day started with an introduction from Gordon Jeyes, Cambridgeshire County Council's deputy chief executive for children and young people's services, and guest of honour Shona Johnstone, the county council's cabinet member for children and young people's services.

She then formally handed over the school buildings to chairman of governors Roderick Mair.A commemorative work of art was specially commissioned by the school from artist Chris Woods, who lives in Stretham.At 10.30am, the children shared school memories in music, pictures and words in the school hall, followed by a visit from a story-teller and a celebratory lunch - including a Lantern School cake.The children then joined in a fun drama and games session led by two drama specialists.

Later in the afternoon, 200 balloons in the school colours of yellow and purple were released, which were on sale throughout the day. Each pupil also received a special commemorative gift to mark the official opening.
