WITHIN days of being released from jail, heroin addict Lucy Waters was caught buying heroin on an Ely street.

Police officers saw her buying drugs from a car that pulled up alongside her in a bus shelter, city magistrates were told.

She had phoned a dealer to arrange the purchase, and bought a £10 wrap of heroin from someone inside the vehicle.

At Ely courthouse on Thursday, 30-year-old Waters, formerly of New Barns Avenue in Ely but now living in Waltham Abbey, admitted possessing 0.1 gram of heroin on June 26.

"Police in an unmarked car saw three people standing in the bus stop near the church," said prosecutor Angela Sassoli.

"They saw a Ford Escort pull up, and the rear nearside window went down. Waters approached the window, and took a small object from a female in the back of the car.

"Waters put the object into her purse, put that into her bag, and walked off towards the cathedral with two other people."

After officers approached Waters and found a small white wrap in her purse, she was arrested. She admitted she telephoned a dealer and arranged the sale, and intended to use the drug herself.

Back on May 24, Waters was jailed for one month, after admitting she breached the terms of a suspended sentence imposed for the possession of heroin.

Solicitor Nick Barnes said Waters had been a heroin user for some time, and on release from jail had gone to live with her mother in Essex.

"She had made a conscious decision to remove herself from Ely," he said. He asked that Waters should be banned from the city as part of a community order.

Sentencing was adjourned for four weeks, so Waters' suitability for a drug rehabilitation order could be assessed.
