MOTORISTS using the A10 could soon have an easier journey into Cambridge.

And East Cambridgeshire shoppers will have better access to Cambridge if a new park and ride site gets the go-ahead.

Cambridgeshire County Council has given the green light to a 1,000-space park and ride site at Butts Lane, Milton, that would alleviate congestion on the A10 and improve access to the city. The county council has recommended that the plans go ahead, pending consultation on cycling and walking routes and the proposals will go to the Secretary of State for approval.

A council spokesman said: "It should be a real improvement for motorists wishing to access Cambridge on the A10 route.

"They will be able to park for free and catch a bus into the city centre without the need to look for a parking space in Cambridge."

He said it is hoped that the scheme would reduce the traffic at the A10 and A14 junction.

"We have to cope with the home building that's going in across East Cambridgeshire, which is, after all, the fastest-growing area in the county," he said.

The first stage of the development will see 500 spaces built on the eastern side of the site, before a further 250 are constructed when funding is secured.

If the scheme is successful, the final stage of development will see a further 250 spaces built.
