THE nervous wait for hundreds of teenagers across East Cambridgeshire was finally over today as they collected their A-level results.
The class of 2013 at Ely College Sixth Form achieved an A*-C pass rate of 66 per cent, up from 60 per cent last year.
Some 16.4% per cent of all passes were at grade A or A*, an increase on last year’s 11 per cent. The overall pass rate was 97.5, a little down on last year’s 100 per cent pass rate.
One student, Ian Cousins achieved three A*s in maths, further maths and physics, topping these off with an A in chemistry, despite fighting - and winning - a battle against Leukaemia when he was a child.
Courtney Pettifor, finalist in this year’s YOPEYS, achieved a distinction in his BTEC sport triple award and a C in AS-level maths, and hopes to take up a place at Twickenham University studying sports science.
Mark Sirot-Smith, director of Ely College Sixth Form said: “I would like to congratulate all students collecting their results today. They should be very proud of their achievements.”
As students celebrated their own personal achievements, they also remembered the recent loss of their fellow student Jack Ure, who was killed tragically in a car crash just after his final exam in June.
Jack’s results were delivered to his parents by Mr Sirot-Smith today.
Pupils at King’s Ely Sixth Form, meanwhile, enjoyed another bumper year, with 33 per cent achieving A*-A grades, up on 29 per cent last year, and 99 per cent passing at A*-E.
Individual achievers, who all received at least three A*s or As, include Leo Banahan, Luke Cave, Sophie Emms, Milly Green, Tommy Chien, Isabelle Elliott, Jamie Huffer, Tony Lesmeister, Axel Rois, Clea Tanner, Nina Wang, James Wege and Charles Lin.
Molly Blacknell scored 100 per cent in her textiles, Matvey Pogrebinskiy scored 100 per cent in his Russian A Level and Luke Cave scored 100 per cent in his physics modules. Luke received A*s in maths, chemistry, physics and the extended project A Level, and AS in biology and AS further maths, thus securing his first choice place to read medicine at Christ Church, Oxford.
“I am absolutely thrilled with my results,” said Luke. “I am pleased that all of the hard work has paid off as I studied so hard and I don’t think that I could have done anything more.”
Year 12 students have also been celebrating their AS results today. High achievers, who all received four AS, include Georgia Baynes, Robert Seddon-Greve, Laura Day, George Ryan, Constance Wynn, Sanjiban Mandal and Emma White. Connie Wynn achieved 100 per cent in her AS textiles and William Hodgson scored 100 per cent in AS fine art.
Principal of King’s Ely, Sue Freestone, said: “We are delighted with the achievements of our young people again this year. Their hard work has reaped just reward and I congratulate them, together with the teachers who have supported them through the process. We celebrate the success of those who achieve the highest grades through dint of commitment and passion for their subjects. Equally, I congratulate those who have found the academic demands more of a challenge yet still managed to reached or exceed expectations. We are very proud of them all.”
