THE 2006 Ely in Bloom campaign was launched on Monday with a cheque for £1,000.
The cheque was handed over by city mayor Cllr Bryant Watson to Cllr Sheila Friend-Smith, who chairs the Ely in Bloom group.
"This is a very generous gesture by the mayor that will get the campaign off to a flying start," said Cllr Friend-Smith.
"I hope it will help us to do even better than our first attempt last year."
Ely was given a bronze award by the 2005 Anglia in Bloom judges, Ely Railway Station picked up silver and Jubilee Gardens was included among the best public open spaces in the region.
In addition, the sensory garden at Highfield School was picked as the region's best in the special needs category.
