A MOTORIST caught driving at 85mph along the Forty Foot Bank at Chatteris - the site of several fatal accidents - was fined £300 this week.

Lee Burgess, 20, of Dalton Way, Ely, admitted breaking the 50mph speed limit. He had six points endorsed on his driving licence, and must pay £35 costs and a £15 surcharge.

"The 50mph limit is there so people don't drive into the river," he was told by Peter Waterfield, presiding magistrates at Wisbech courthouse. "A number of people have lost their lives there.
