More than 600 people are set to take part in the annual Ely 5k run in aid of the Arthur Rank Hospice this Sunday, November 20.

Sharon Lee, who volunteers in Littleport’s Branching Out charity shop and is a dinner lady at Littleport Primary Community School, took up running 18 months ago to get fit.

She has since persuaded her nine-year-old daughter Madison to join her in Sunday’s event.

“Once Madison knew that everyone who completed the race would be given a medal, she was keen to join me in the competition,” she said.

Sharon, who lost her dad, Bob Lee, to cancer two years ago, added: “He would think I was mad if he knew I was running, but deep down I think he would also be proud of me.”

Cathy Gibb-de Swarte, advertising manager of Littleport Life Magazine, will be dressed in a reindeer outfit and hopes to pick up the ‘best dressed runner’ award after the race.

Tasha Auburn, Arthur Rank Hospice marketing and events organiser, said: “The event has grown from strength to strength.

“The first run, seven years ago, attracted 97 runners – and last year’s run raised £12,000.”
