Cambridgeshire food reviewer Lucy Melton shares her thoughts following a recent visit to The Royal Standard in Ely

Last Friday, I headed to The Royal Standard in Ely for one of their special nights.

This is the first time I've been able to attend one, and it was great.

The theme was Tapas & Sangria, they had a whole menu dedicated to the evening, and we made sure to try most of it.

We had a variety of dishes- I absolutely loved the chorizo; it was glazed with red wine and honey, and it was perfect.

It's always a favourite dish of mine, and I loved having the bread to dip into it.

The garlic and chilli prawns were a bit spicy for me but my friends liked them .

The patatas bravas were really tasty and a great dish to pair with everything!

The bigger dishes of beef and pork belly were incredible. The meat just fell apart in both!

The black pudding with the pork was so tasty, and the greens with the beef were the perfect way to tie it all together.

Another highlight was the whipped goat's cheese on sourdough with chorizo jam.

Wow,  I wish I didn't have to share that dish, I could have eaten it all myself!

I really enjoyed the crispy squid; there was plenty of it, and it had great flavour with the lemon and garlic aioli.

Finally the Jamón croquettes were so cheesy and tasty.

I only had the red sangria as I was driving, but I really liked it. It had a great fruity yet rich flavour.

My friends tried the rosé and white sangrias as well and said they were delicious!

I will be keeping an eye out for the next special evening and will definitely be attending, I loved the change up in menu and the service was great, the whole palace had a really good atmosphere!
