The future of an Ely supermarket's café that suddenly closed its doors last year has been confirmed in an exciting update.

Sainsbury's café, on Lisle Lane, was among 61 branches to close for good in April last year in a move that saw 3,000 jobs axed.

The supermarket chain said customers did not use the cafés regularly, with specialist partners, including Starbucks, becoming more popular.

In January, a spokesperson said the store would "continue to support customers and communities they serve in a range of ways".

In a statement, they added: "We’re exploring future opportunities for the space and will keep our colleagues and customers updated."

It has now been revealed that Costa Coffee will open a store in the vacant unit, in a move expected to create 10 new jobs.

A spokesperson said: "We’re excited to be opening our new Costa Coffee store next week in the Sainsbury’s Ely Superstore on June 5.

"Our talented team of 10 baristas look forward to welcoming shoppers and customers to enjoy their favourite Costa coffee."
