Cambridgeshire councillors are calling for a stretch of a major A-road to become a dual carriageway to reduce delays.
Soham South and Wicken Councillor Lucius Vellacott and Stretham Councillor Lee Denney will propose the motion at an East Cambridgeshire District Council meeting on May 21.
The motion calls for the full dualling of the A10 corridor between Ely and Cambridge.
This part of the A10 currently carries more than 18,000 vehicles per day and is an important route for commuters, freight, agricultural traffic and local communities across East Cambridgeshire.
It is currently largely single carriageway, which results in congestion, delays, safety concerns and lack of reliability for drivers.
The need to upgrade the A10 corridor has been recognised for decades and public engagement undertaken in 2020 demonstrated strong local interest in improving the corridor.
Cllr Lucius Vellacott said: “The A10 corridor is critical to supporting planned growth across the region, including up to 17,000 new homes and 14,000 new jobs, and is essential to maintaining the economic vitality of East Cambridgeshire and neighbouring areas.
“Full dualling of the A10 between Ely and Cambridge is the most effective long-term solution to address congestion, improve safety, and provide the capacity required to support the sustainable growth of the region.
“Failure to progress the scheme risks constraining economic development, worsening congestion for residents and businesses and undermining confidence in the delivery of essential regional infrastructure.”
The council have said that they believe the project must remain a priority given the work already undertaken.
They are also resolving to instruct the Leader of the Council to write to the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough requesting that the A10 dualling scheme remains a priority and that work continues without delay.
