An HGV driver has been arrested after two women were killed in a crash on the A10 between Littleport and Ely.

The head-on collision, between an HGV fuel tanker and an Audi, took place at about 6.40pm yesterday (Thursday February 12) on the single carriageway road, which runs parallel to Chettisham.

The HGV left the road and came to rest in a nearby field, while the Audi was pushed 100m further up the road.

The driver of the Audi, a 25-year-old woman, and the front seat passenger, a 71-year-old woman - both from Littleport - were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The HGV driver, a 40-year-old man from Basildon, was checked over by paramedics but was uninjured.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail until May 10 pending further enquiries.

The A10 between Ely and Littleport is likely to remain closed for the remainder of the day.

An investigation has been launched and officers are appealing for information and dashcam footage from anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or the vehicles in the moments leading up to it.

Anyone with information should contact police online, quoting Operation Eastcote or incident 455 of February 12.

Those without internet access should call 101.
