Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued a warning over reports of children playing on frozen lakes in the county today.

The service has asked parents and guardians to remind their children of the dangers, with ice often appearing thicker than it is.

This comes amid extremely low temperatures across the country, with a yellow Met Office warning in place for Cambridgeshire for snow and ice, and an amber cold weather warning for the East of England.

A post from the rescue service said: "We’ve had reports of young people playing on frozen lakes in the county this afternoon.

"With the cold weather set to last another couple of days, and for some young people, schools not going back until midweek, please can parents and guardians remind their children of the real dangers of playing on lakes when iced over.

"The ice may not be as thick as it appears and the water if they fall in will be freezing cold and could send the body into cold shock so they become unable to swim to safety.

"If you do see anyone in trouble in the water, dial 999 and provide your What3words location - that way we get get help to you as quickly as possible. Download the What3Words app so you always have it handy and encourage your children too as well."
