For our final Looking Back feature of 2025, the Ely Standard is revisiting New Year celebrations across East Cambridgeshire through time.
After the Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, we end up in 'Twixmas' - a term coined to mark the in-between period of Christmas and New Year.
We looked at how Christmas was celebrated across the region last week, so in honour of 'Twixmas', we have decided to take a look at New Year celebrations across East Cambridgeshire.
Thanks to the Cambridgeshire Community Archive Network, we have been able to find some wonderful photos from as early as 1913, and as recent as 2019.

Above, we have the Ely Wesleyan Choir at their New Year's Eve party in 1913.
You can see in the photo that many people were dressed in their finery for the celebration, with some decorations hung from the ceiling.

More than 700 runners decided to shed off their Christmas dinner with a 10 kilometre run in Little Downham on New Year's Eve in 2019.
The run started at the village hall and saw people of all ages come together for their own New Year's Eve celebrations, ahead of partying that night.

We have another New Year's Eve party above, this time at Mepal Village Hall, dated sometime between 1977 and 1981.
There is bunting hanging in the background and everyone looks very smart for their celebrations.

Over in Pymoor, villagers celebrated the New Year celebrations in style with a disco at the Pymoor Cricket and Social Club in 2014.
Whatever celebrations you get up to at New Year, the Ely Standard wishes all of its readers a very Happy New Year for 2026!
