The Stained Glass Museum in Ely has received a grant exceeding £90,000.

The substantial grant from The Julia Rausing Trust will be used to conserve the museum's stained glass collection, enhance environmental assessment, and provide training opportunities over the next three years.

A stained glass conservator will be appointed under this project to preserve the museum's stained glass windows and make necessary adaptations in the gallery to protect the art pieces.

The museum will also offer two stained glass conservation internships to train future conservators.

These students will have the opportunity to develop and apply their skills in a public setting while completing their studies.

Director and curator of The Stained Glass Museum, Dr Jasmine Allen, said: "This grant of over £90,000 from The Julia Rausing Trust will allow the museum to undertake some essential conservation work to our specialist collection, whilst sharing this process with the public too.

"We are particularly delighted to be able to host conservation placements for trainee conservators as part of the project and offer the unique experience to combine the practicalities of stained glass conservation within our museum, which is based in a Grade-1 listed historic setting."

In addition to conservation and training, the project will also aim to familiarise the public with the processes and techniques involved in conservation.

This will be done through various mediums including online videos, behind-the-scenes tours, and other interactive learning opportunities.

The museum plans to engage children in these activities during school holidays and educational visits, focusing on the science of conservation and environmental aspects.

Furthermore, the grant will finance an environmental assessment and enable the museum to upgrade its environmental monitoring system.

This is expected to boost the care and management of the historical stained glass collections within the museum’s current unique Cathedral setting.
