Readers of the Ely Standard have reacted to plans that would see a new roundabout built on a busy A-road in Cambridgeshire.

If approved, the roundabout would be on the A10 at Waterbeach, serving as the "main gateway" for the growing town.

Urban&Civic said the roundabout marks a "significant step forward in delivering key transport infrastructure to support the emerging new town at Waterbeach".

The roundabout will also provide access to the relocated Waterbeach train station.

Sharing their views on the Ely Standard's Facebook page, readers offered their reactions to the plans put forward by the developer.

Chris Blake said the road "doesn't need a new roundabout" because "they increase congestion", adding the A10 needs "to be completely upgraded".

He added: "It takes me 2 hours to drive from Ely to Cambridge and back again because of the traffic."

Ioan Davies suggested "saving making roundabouts" and build a "dual carriageway between Ely and Cambridge".

Meanwhile, Vincent Stanley said: "How about moving it up a bit and tying it in with Emmaus corner junction, which is an accident black spot."

The new roundabout will be built alongside the existing road to minimise disruption and ensure the A10 remains open during the majority of the works.

It has been designed to accommodate the future capacity required for the new town and the travel hub and could be made larger if further investment in the A10 is received.

Project manager at the Greater Cambridge Partnership Paul van de Bulk said the proposed roundabout is a "great example" of "organisations working together."

"The roundabout will be an integral connection between our proposed Waterbeach to Cambridge busway and travel hub, the new housing and the relocated station," he added.
