The Ely Air Cadet Squadron supported VJ Day commemorations at St Mary’s Church in Ely and the city's beacon lighting.

The cadets took part in a moving evening of remembrance to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.

The commemorations, organised by the Royal British Legion, began with a tea party at 6pm on August 15 where veterans, cadets, and local residents gathered to reflect on the sacrifices made during the Far East campaign of the Second World War.

At 7pm, St Mary’s Church hosted a poignant service of remembrance. The congregation heard readings and music honouring those who served in the Pacific theatre, ensuring their stories and sacrifices continue to be remembered by future generations.

Following the service, a symbolic beacon was lit outside the church at 7.45pm by the Mayor of Ely, Cllr Mike Banyard, who was accompanied by Royal British Legion members, residents, and local cadets.

The act of lighting the beacon, a traditional symbol of peace following conflict, was underscored by a performance from the Sing! Choir, whose songs brought the community together in shared remembrance.

This VJ Day commemoration follows earlier city-wide tributes to VE Day, including the ringing of St Mary’s bells and the illumination of Ely Cathedral, linking the community’s remembrance of both European and Pacific theatres of the Second World War.

Although more than half of Ely's Air Cadet Squadron were unable to attend—many being away on family holidays or taking part in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition in the Peak District—the cadets still made a strong showing at the event.

The DofE expedition, running since Friday morning under the supervision of the squadron’s Adventure Training Team, was a major milestone for the unit. This year, 21 cadets are on track to achieve their Silver Award, with many of them already preparing to begin their Gold Award in 2026.

Squadron representatives said it was always a privilege to support Ely’s remembrance events, ensuring the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East and other conflicts continue to be honoured in the heart of the community.
