A 24-hour 800-mile charity bikeathon organised by the Ely Tigers under 13s rugby team raised £3,000 in memory of one of the player's mums.

Teammates and parents participated in cycling through the night at Cambridge Commodities Park on March 16-17.

The proceeds will be donated to Arthur Rank Hospice and Cancer Research UK in honour of Sam Carford, mother of U13s player Thomas Carford, who lost her battle with cancer in September 2023.

The idea for the event was conceived by coach Chris Holmes and Sam's husband, David Carford, back in January.

They wanted to give back to the people who supported Sam and their family during her courageous fight.

David Carford, father to Owen, Emily, and Thomas, said: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.

“This achievement is incredible and raised vital funds for two amazing charities.”

Initially, the target was set at £2,000, but the total amount raised so far has exceeded expectations.

Throughout the 24-hour event, 36 riders took turns cycling, with supporters cheering them on throughout the night.

Even members of the Ely Hockey team, along with visitors attending the U10's festival at the rugby club, contributed to the cause after their matches over the weekend.

Over the 24 hours, a total of 1288km was cycled - equating to 800 miles.

Angela Smith, whose son is in the Ely Tigers U13s rugby team, said: "The organisers would like to express their gratitude to everyone involved.

"This includes the rugby club, EOSA and staff, Life Fitness UK for providing the spin bikes, Grow Gardens for the van hire, and Steve at the Co-op for donating bottles of water.

"A special thank you goes to Nigel from Blueshed, who came through at the last minute by loaning a big screen and countdown clock.

"The dedication and commitment shown by all participants, even during the late hours/early morning, made this event a great bonding experience for the team.

"It has been heart-warming to witness their support for their teammate and friend."
