Residents have given their verdicts on Ely’s 20mph zone as expansion work gets underway.

Last year, Cambridgeshire County Council approved a city-wide 20mph zone for Ely which will be paid for by the Transforming Cities Fund.

In a tweet, the council said work to expand the restricted zone will begin on Monday and is due to last four weeks.

"We're expecting these works to take around four weeks," the council said in a tweet on X.

"We won't need to close any roads, so disruption should be minimal."

On Friday, Ely City Council issued a statement to restate its views on the city’s 20MPH zone.

It said: “On behalf of City of Ely Council, we are proud to restate the council's commitment to its support for 20mph for Ely.

“The City of Ely Council looks forward to work starting on the installation of signs and street furniture to implement 20mph for Ely.”

The statement is signed by Cllr Chris Phillips, Chair of the City of Ely Council and Cllr Rebecca Denness, chair of the Climate and Environment Committee

There has been a mixed response to the idea, with some angry that they were not consulted about the plans.

One Facebook user described the plans as a “joke”, adding: “How can less than 195 people make such a decision for the 30K in Ely. A Facebook poll got 1000 more responses in 12 hours than one month of council advanced warning.”

Another user said. “It’s 20mph is towns everywhere in Wales now. Takes a while to get used to it, but far less dangerous.”

One user added: “The fact is the majority of the city did not know it was happening until after the plans were approved. If they had been aware, clearly, they would have voiced their opinions earlier rather than waiting until it’s too late.”
