A record number of charitable donations have been made by the team who organise Ely's annual fireworks display.

Following another highly successful annual fireworks evening at Cherry Hill Park on November 4, 2023, organisers Ely Community Events Team ( ECET ), were delighted to be able to make a donation of £2,500 to the Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust.

The Trust is a charitable organisation within Addenbrooke's Hospital which offers a range of valuable areas of support for those suffering from cancer, in particular to children and their families.

A cheque handed over by the mayor Ely, Cllr Chris Phillips was gratefully received by Joe Sagoe, the Trust’s corporate lead, at Ely Tourist Information Centre.

The level of monies raised from the event in 2023 has enabled ECET to hand over the highest number of donations ever made, all to local charities, community organisations, and worthy causes.

To date, it says, 34 such donations have been made, with one major beneficiary still to come.

Those benefiting have included schools and other youth organisations, some to fund much-needed equipment, local arts projects, Age UK, homeless charities, and the much-"deserving Ely Foodbank.

"The ECET team would like to thank once again all those who helped to make the evening such a success and in turn the ability to assist all of these recipients," said Michael Judkins from the group.

"In particular Radio Cambridgeshire and host Louise Hulland, Fireworks Crazy for a stunning display, Ely Cathedral for usage of the field, all of the local outlets who kindly undertook ticket sales, and valued event sponsors Cambridge Commodities."

The work of the team continues throughout the year and already planning is well in hand for 2014’s event – the date for your diary is November 2."
