Ely's air cadets were busy in the run up to Christmas helping shoppers pack their shopping bags at Waitrose supermarket.

Eighteen cadets worked in two hour shifts packing the customers Christmas food shopping supported by their commanding officer and three adult civilian committee members who support the squadron through fund raising throughout the year.

The cadets really enjoyed helping Ely's shoppers, chatting to them and helping the checkout staff who praised the cadets for their politeness, and "professional packing".

The customers were extremely positive about the cadets and they generously made donations to the squadron using the collection  buckets that Waitrose allowed the Squadron to position on the checkouts.

Flight Lieutenant Donoghue said: "I'd like to send a huge thank you to Waitrose who allowed our cadets to help their customers pack their Christmas shopping bags.

"To Ely's shoppers we would like to say how lovely you were towards our cadets and how generous you were with your donations and compliments.

"Thank you to the cadets for their hard work and giving up their free time to help their fellow cadets.

"As was commented on by so many shoppers, our cadets are often seen helping in the local community and we look forward to helping out at similar events in the future."

The Waitrose customer donations to the cadets will go towards the squadron’s welfare fund which is there to help cadets who may need financial assistance towards items such as shoes to wear in uniform or boots or waterproofs to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
