A Christmas toy bank in Ely has been hailed as a "resounding success".

Santa’s Xmas Toy Bank was held at St Mary's Church from December 14-16.

Peter Harris, organiser, said: "I would like to thank all those individuals, families and companies who supported the toy bank.

"It was a resounding success on all fronts and many youngsters certainly left with smiles on their faces."

Mr Harris added that this year’s demand "far exceeded our expectations - both from within Ely and the local villages.

"Without the help of our numerous collection points, the generosity of the community and the support of St Mary’s Church, this event would not have happened .

"We were overwhelmed by the level of community support and demand enabling us to expand our delivery service (December 18-22) to many of the Fen villages, especially to those families with limited transport options."

Festive music was played by a King’s student-led brass band as well as the Allen family quartet.

Neil Porter Thaw also serenaded those present on the organ on consecutive days and all the music was extremely well received.

Gifts and donations were made to EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospices), Ormiston Families, Breaking Barriers, women’s refuges, local primary schools and children in care.

"My thanks to the elves and volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the event and to all those who supported and participated in it," added Peter.

"A special word of thanks must also go to the King’s students who volunteered to help us.

"We look forward to seeing you all again next year."
