Ely Standard columnist Rosemary Westwell shares her Christmas message and looks to the future

As we come to the end of the year, it is time to reflect on the year we have had.

Looking with rose-tinted glasses, it has been a wonderful year - full of joy and activity.

But with a slightly more jaded approach, it was a fragmented year with Covid still interfering in our usual jolly pursuits.

Personally, the year has been good. I’ve been entertained with concerts and shows to attend and review; in fact, a glowing email from a proud parent made me feel the effort in writing it was well worthwhile.

My little choir has given me much joy too; if you are a singer, you will realise, more than anything, there is nothing like a good sing and time away from it is sorely missed.

This Christmas season has given us plenty of opportunities to join in with others so that, if you’re worried about your voice, no one notices in a crowd.

Another good thing this year has been noticing that, even though Covid is still with us and interfering, people have started to come out of their shells.

Many a volunteer have stepped forward to offer to do jobs they enjoy (but some of us don’t) - like cleaning, running a baby café, craft mornings and fairs, pop up café’s and flower festivals.

Of course, the major event this year must have been the Coronation of King Charles 111, a glorious occasion that, for me, meant going down to the church and trying to set up some music for the events there.

On a local level, it was disappointing when Prezzo had to close - as so many businesses in Ely have.

I guess all we can do is to try to continue to support them, to keep our local businesses flourishing.

Enjoy 2024.
