Littleport loves its sports of every kind. The traditional sort that you can play in the popular pubs - I used to like bar billiards and shove ha’penny - but there’s still darts and pool and dominoes at the Crown Inn and the Plough and Harrow, plus carpet bowls too (Thursdays 10-12noon) at the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

Or a choice of modern sporting pursuits including yoga and weight training sessions at Littleport Leisure with a plethora of indoor and outside activities.

And it’s where Littleport’s Lions Korfball Club and Rangers Football Club have their home games.

Although some sports clubs are still looking for sponsors, like Littleport Leisure based Ely Roller Skating Club, many of Littleport’s businesses do sponsor teams.

Littleport Town Reserves by LG Car Sales (owner Trevor Bailey) Littleport Rangers Under 10s get LS Fencing (Nicky King) Under 12s Navy DS Construction (Dave Silcock) Under 16s Football Fun Factory (Nathan Mitchell) and Littleport Lions Korfball Club, LG Car Sales via Club Captain Alexander Andrews.

In their second consecutive win, last week at home, the Littleport Lions beat Cambridge Phoenix 12-9.

Littleport’s successful Bowls Club has been sponsored by LG Car Sales proprietor Trevor Bailey, and as well as members only carpet bowls on Fridays, they play dominoes Saturdays. New members welcome.

For those whose active sporting days are behind them, or living alone, there are other energising options. On November 5 at Littleport village hall the monthly Friendship Group meets from 2-4pm.

Kathryn Buck the organiser said: “While it tends to attract more mature people it’s for anyone who finds themselves on their own on that day and who would enjoy some company. £2, refreshments, cakes, a free raffle, quite often Bingo and sometimes singing.”

And the sociable Littleport Society has a free talk on beekeeping by expert Paul Howe on Tuesday November 7 from 7.30-9pm at Littleport village hall. For a full calendar of all Littleport events: www.littleportwhatson.co.uk.
