Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging those who use chimneys to get them swept at least once a year after a fire in East Cambridgeshire this week.

A crew from Soham was called to a chimney fire in Collins Hill in Fordham at 8:38pm on Wednesday (October 11).

Firefighters used small gear and rods to extinguish the fire and returned to their station by 12.10am.

The cause of the fire was accidental.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Please ensure that you get your chimney swept and brick work inspected regularly, at least once a year.

“The debris buildup in the flue can be set alight when heating the home, which could cause a significant fire. Regular chimney maintenance will help prevent this from happening.

“As the cold weather begins to arrive, it is important to get your chimney swept before lighting it for the first time.”
