How much do you think Ely has changed in the last 50, 25 or even 10 years?

It seems like almost every day in the city there is a new arrival or a farewell to a familiar sight which, over time, transforms the cityscape.

Meanwhile, other iconic landmarks have truly stood the test of time and look just as they did in bygone eras.

Well, thanks to Google Maps, we can go back to then and reminisce on those times, and we can even see what buildings have been home to over the years.

This is the first of many of the Ely Standard’s Then and now features. Then and now will take you as readers back in time, allowing you to see how the city of Ely has changed over the years.

We will be sharing the change in shops, pubs, road layout changes and developments over the coming weeks, and are asking you to send us recommendations of places you, as Ely residents, would like to see.

We thought it was very fitting to start this new feature off with the then and now of our old Ely Standard office, which is now home to a cupcake business called Hand Crafted Cupcakes and has been for some time.

The first Google Maps image of the Ely Standard office was taken back in 2008 and the last in 2010.

The first image of Hand Crafted Cupcakes on 42 Market Street was uploaded June 2017 and the business is still occupying the building today.
