A 16-year-old roller skater from East Cambridgeshire is heading to Italy this weekend to compete in the European Cup.

Maddison Bourn, who came second in the British Figure Championships at youth level, has been selected by GB Skate Artistic to represent Great Britain at the European Cup in Bologna on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17.

Fellow skater, Mallory Pearce, who came second in the GBSA dance championships espoire category, is also selected for the Hettange Grande Open international dance competition in France in October.

Both girls skate at Ely Roller Skating Club which is based at Littleport Leisure Centre.

Ely Roller Skating Club’s chair, Alice Figgins, who was present at a bake sale set up in the leisure centre foyer during Saturday morning’s usual fun skate to help Maddison and Mallory’s expenses, said: “We have to do everything we can to support our skaters, and we know Maddison and Mallory will do us proud.”

The cake stall raised £420.

Cathy King is among other skaters training hard under top coach Sophie Woodbridge and they are sure to emulate the success of Maddison and Mallory in the near future.
