An explorer scout from Ely has been selected to represent the district at the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea next month (August).

Thomas Leach, 14, will fly to Korea on Wednesday (July 26) with 44 other members of the Scouting Association in Cambridgeshire.

“I was so excited when I found out I had been chosen to travel to the Jamboree,” said Thomas, who is a pupil at Ely College.

“I first met the other members of the group in November 2021, and we have had a few camps since then to get to know each other.”

The 25th World Scout Jamboree is being held in Seoul from August 1-12. There will be 40,000 scouts gathering at the event which is held every four years.

Those who make up the UK group travelling to the event have had to fundraise for their places.

Thomas has washed cars, volunteered at the Cambridge Rock Festival and taken part in a sponsored climb.

Once the group arrives in Korea, they will spend several days sightseeing in Seoul before travelling to the Jamboree.

“I’m most looking forward to meeting people from other countries,” said Thomas.

“Lots of different countries set up stalls where they have food you can try and activities to learn about other cultures. I’ve been collecting badges that I can swap at sweepstakes.”

The World Scout Jamboree is holding a range of interactive sessions that young people across the country can join in with.

On August 6, everyone from the youngest Squirrel and Rainbow up to the oldest volunteer will be able to join in the fun of the Jamboree without leaving their home.

Dream:LIVE starts at 9am UK time with a livestream from the Jamboree and then activities throughout the day until 5pm.

Anyone can take part in this event and earn a special Scouting badge. You can find out more and register on the Scouting website.
